Is it just Kbin, or does every fediverse service have the issue of being totally swarmed with bots advertising illegal pharmaceuticals? Is this just the result of limited moderation?

iso ,
@iso@lemy.lol avatar

It’s just Kbin and I hate it 🙂 Kbin has 10x more spam than Lemmy due to poor moderation.

You've picked a nice name :) I'm glad you didn't choose fedipedia.

I just created an account on open.ibis.wiki and created "Lemmy" article but it's not shown on ibis.wiki 🤔 I guess it still has a long way to go, but I think it's a nice project 👍

iso ,
@iso@lemy.lol avatar

Nice. I guess "Summary" is something like git commit message. I thought it more as the summary of the article :)

iso ,
@iso@lemy.lol avatar

Nice post but hard to read. How about using tables?

head 1 head 2
body 1 body 2

like this:

| head 1 | head 2 |
| --- | --- |
| body 1 | body 2 |

Edit: are we sure the data is correct? For example; Lemmy.ml has 16 communities over 10k. Which are linux, memes, asklemmy, technology, worldnews, privacy, opensource, gaming, fediverse, unixporn, linux_gaming, reddit, science, lemmy, selfhost, jerboa.

iso ,
@iso@lemy.lol avatar

I don't understand those who criticize Lemmy developers. They were developing it while you were not here, I don't think they will stop just because you are leaving :)

    With Lemmy 0.19, you can block instances individually FYI.

    iso OP ,
    @iso@lemy.lol avatar

    Maybe. I need to check Kbin API docs.

    iso OP ,
    @iso@lemy.lol avatar

    90% of Lemmy's storage/bandwidth load comes from the top 100 communities. So communities with lil activity probably wouldn't create much of a burden.

    And yes, both instances must register on the site and choose which instances they allow. Either allowing instances explicitly or with some filters.

    iso OP ,
    @iso@lemy.lol avatar

    Yes. But you can still do that, there are so many unmoderated communities anyway.

    A new internet is forming (& Meta wants to control it) ( yewtu.be )

    A federated internet is forming. It's built on open protocols like ActivityPub & connects services like Mastodon, Threads, Pixelfed, Tumblr, Wordpress and more into a connected network known as the fediverse. And everyone from tech enthusiasts to Mark Zuckerberg and Jack Dorsey seem to want in.

    iso ,
    @iso@lemy.lol avatar

    Literally this. Right now you can’t create your own mail server because big corpos like Google, Microsoft is going to make you end up in spam folder.

    Now, apply this to fediverse.

    iso ,
    @iso@lemy.lol avatar

    You can technically create but you can never be sure that your mails will received.

    They don’t usurp the service but make it uncomfortable/unstable to you.

    @iso@lemy.lol avatar

    It is about power. If they have more than 50% of the users, then all other instances should comply with their changes and obey them. If they don’t, then they’ll be blocked by more than half of the users. No instance owner will take this risk.

    I’m trying to explain you that you don’t really need to own something to own it. If you have enough power, you have it already.

    Rust? eww 🤮. Someone should rewrite it in Java(!)

    Sublinks Aims to Be a Drop-In Replacement for Lemmy ( wedistribute.org )

    Seems like an interesting effort. A developer is building an alternative Java-based backend to Lemmy's Rust-based one, with the goal of building in a handful of different features. The dev is looking at using this compatibility to migrate their instance over to the new platform, while allowing the community to use their apps of...

    @iso@lemy.lol avatar

    Well, that's probably requires a back-end server and a database.

    Another reason to not use ccTLDs.

    iso ,
    @iso@lemy.lol avatar

    Nope. The ones you're mentioned are gTLD (generic top-level domain) but most of the other domains are generic TLD too. See here for the list: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Internet_top-level_domains

    Just don't use country-code TLDs because they can removed by those countries. For example fmhy.ml and now queer.af.

    iso ,
    @iso@lemy.lol avatar

    Yeah that's true. We just need to research who owns the TLD before long-term site and everything is ok.

    Threads will allow you to follow Mastodon users by year-end, according to Meta meeting details | TechCrunch ( techcrunch.com )

    Threads’ roadmap for integrations with the fediverse, aka the network of decentralized apps that includes Twitter/X rival Mastodon and others, has been revealed. A new blog post by Tom Coates, the co-founder of an older decentralized app called Planetary, details the events of a December meeting at Meta’s offices where the...

    Giving them your own data legally and that they illegally fetch your data is not same.

    So why the New York Times sued OpenAI? There are multiple cases regarding this. Why do online and public platforms feel entitled to sue AI companies (according to you)?

    If OpenAI and NYT were 2 news sites in the fediverse and had the ability to share their news with each other; I'm sure NYT couldn't file such a lawsuit.

    iso ,
    @iso@lemy.lol avatar

    That's the difference I'm trying to explain. If you give them, you have no right. If they do it themselves, then you can at least sue.

    It's like I stop locking my door because there's a chance burglars could break into my house and steal things at any time.

    iso OP ,
    @iso@lemy.lol avatar

    Its polling every 30th second only on my instance. So don’t worry, it will not make any difference for you ✌️

    iso OP ,
    @iso@lemy.lol avatar

    I’m using a library named lemmy-bot. To achieve what you say, I need to modify both library and lemmy server. As you can guess, I can’t afford time for these 🙂

    I think it’s not using much resources anyways. 2 requests per minute is nothing compared to hundreds of ActivityPub requests per second.

    I didn’t tested non-followed community, but the bot works with mention event instead of comment. But still not sure, I’ll test this one 🙏

    iso OP ,
    @iso@lemy.lol avatar

    I think to get mentioned comment, it needs to get parent post too. As I said, I need to test it. I can only assume right now.

    iso OP ,
    @iso@lemy.lol avatar

    This feature must be implemented by built-in in the first place. But your idea makes sense too. I’ll try to discuss this with UI devs.

    iso OP ,
    @iso@lemy.lol avatar

    I'm moving bot messages to PMs right now. So there will be no bot message.

    iso OP ,
    @iso@lemy.lol avatar

    I don't think those would work TBH. Activation can be done by PM, but I don't think anyone would want to do that.

    iso ,
    @iso@lemy.lol avatar

    I can register. Do I need to download it tho? I’m on iOS.

    iso , (edited )
    @iso@lemy.lol avatar

    Not just spam, it is also using system resources as high as big instances. I just defederated from it.

    I wish someone made this integration in an app, that shows both Lemmy and Reddit feed, without an instance.

    iso ,
    @iso@lemy.lol avatar

    lol you’re right 😅

    But there are some illegal methods to do it; This instance (alien.top) is an example of it. Some people even still using Apollo.

    The problem is, these methods are simply not ideal. You cannot put your app to the stores, possible consequences of illegal usage etc. no body wants it.

    What makes AT protocol “more predictable, consistent”? I cannot find a detailed article about the protocol except empty hype articles.

    iso ,
    @iso@lemy.lol avatar

    So in AT, unlike in AP, activity takes place between multiple servers and not only two servers 🤔

    iso ,
    @iso@lemy.lol avatar

    Its not exactly decentralized. Yes its splitted across several servers, but these servers still centralizes the users/data. In order for us to truly say decentralized, each user must keep their own data and no other authority should be able to interfere with this user's data.

    iso ,
    @iso@lemy.lol avatar

    How about govt computers? Do they have Linux on them or what? 10% is pretty big 👌
