Ive just installed Linux (Fedora 40 KDE) on my main PC over the weekend, so im a complete newbie and i apologize if some of my questions are nonsensical 😅. Yesterday evening the system seemed to completely lock up at a certain point while playing Red Dead Redemption 2 for the first time (installed & run via steam using proton...
When firefox is not in a maximized window, the resolution of the window is very small, and changing the resolution by hand all the time is annoying, so I want to give it a fixed size. How can I do this?
I haven't used any of the 3, but from a look over them superfile looks a lot more user friendly and has a nicer overall look.
Edit; the install process is rough though, complains about missing glibc but searching for that package in apt doesn't show anything promising. It also seems to require some kind of third party font that isn't included? I gave up lol that's too much for me to deal with.
It's definitely a big learning curve with how complex installing things on linux is haha, I'm still used to windows just open the exe installer and that's it.
I mean there's that, but it's a lot of work for a dev too.
I would rather Linux just be able to detect what's missing and install it for me. In the case of a lot of missing components, what it says is missing will be named completely different from the package you need to install which makes it really hard.
It was always nice with windows installers because they would come with the needed components, or windows would just prompt to install them automatically.
Thanks to /u/[email protected] for mentioning KDE window rules. In KDE, we can add rules for windows so that they behave in specific ways. One rule that can be added is the position: remember rule, and it's possible to make that rule apply to all windows by removing the match field. This way, closing and reopening...
so I finally got the motivation to install lineage os to my phone after thinking about it like year. and now that I finally modified this phone I started thinking about ricing this phone a bit. I'm looking for a launcher that isn't too minimalistic and with a decent amount of customization. kinda like kde bit you know... stable....
EDIT: After reading all the responses, I’ve decided to allow cookies to persist after they close the browser, which I expect will make it so that 2FA doesn’t kick in as often, at least not on their most frequently used web sites. I may also look into privacy oriented browser extensions that might offer some protection, such...
I’ve configured Firefox on their Linux laptop not to keep any cookies after the browser is closed.
Why? Like I get it on your own computers where you're willing to deal with the hassle of that. But it's a huge pain for someone who just wants to use their PC.
I may also look into privacy oriented browser extensions that might offer some protection, such as Privacy Badger.
I've preferred Pixel phones for the last few years but I've heard that Pixel 6/7 had 5G connection problems (Pixel 8 apparently has a better modem, but I think I'd rather stick to a Qualcomm design for now)....
Yep, Proxmox has a built in backup solution which I use paired with proxmox backup server, I also run backups with restic on each VM/CT of the important stuff like config files.
I test restores every now and then, just by either restoring a full VM/CT, or doing a restic restore and checking over some files.
I have been thinking about self-hosting my personal photos on my linux server. After the recent backdoor was detected I'm more hesitant to do so especially because i'm no security expert and don't have the time and knowledge to audit my server....
Self hosting personal photos doesn't generally require opening anything up to the internet, so most backdoors would not be accessible by anyone but you.

That's wild, how do they not have the server budget to show you the website, but do have some to show you a queue signup? Surely those take about the same amount of resources!

I image all my PCs daily with Veeam, bootable media is on my Ventoy USB stick, and restoring is easy as you just boot up the restore media and it pulls the latest backup over the network.
Anything well supported by Valetudo, they have a nice list. I bought a Roborock S5 for $35 on ebay that needed the gearbox for the brush cleaned out, and it works well.
After 2 years and 3 months my pixel 6 got too hot one too many times while charging and using and the battery expanded. Now I replaced it and got a pixel 8....
Slow charging only makes a tiny difference IMO, modern devices don't get very hot while charging and Li-ion is fine up to about 45C during charging.
The best option is stop charging at 80% which will substantially improve battery life, my Samsung has this built in. But for phones that don't you can use a wifi power plug and a Home Assistant automation to turn it off when your phone hits 80%.
I've got a couple of Zigbee plugs, all work well, except one I use for the washing machine. It randomly turns off. When I check the history in HA, it just says that it turns off, no source....
I thought I'd chuck windows on my gaming laptop an Acer nitro 5 from last year, to see how it's going do some bits I can't on Linux VR, certain multiplayer games etc....
Every single driver needed sourcing and installing.
Windows update on W11 will pull basically everything automatically, with the exception of some older proprietary hardware (a lot of gaming and sound devices have really screwed up drivers for example).
Drivers are extremely hit or miss on Linux too especially for anything new, and manually installing some driver is incredibly frustrating since you can't just run an exe and be done.
People have the cheek to complain about Linux’s Nvidia install, literally two clicks on most distros if it isn’t already baked in. Go to website find driver, download click click click agree click wait more software click click wait.
It's the same on windows, go to nvidia website and download the driver and install.
The usual "too many people are getting hit by cars while on bicycles, obviously it's the bicycles that are the problem"
If ebikes that go over 25kmh are already illegal, why would those ebikes have this speed limiter module installed?
Why are ebikes are not allowed to go fast enough to just ride on the road with cars, making it much safer for pedestrians and for the ebikes?
According to Paul Timmer of the Townmaking Institute, getting the device working on all e-bikes should be pretty straightforward. “There are five manufacturers and suppliers of motors for electric bicycles. They all work with similar systems,”
Also completely false, are they going to make it illegal to buy ebikes that don't come with those 5 drive systems from large corporations, and shut out the small businesses that make ebike motors?

If the charger is underpowered the laptop draws from both the battery and the charger at the same time, since the charger cannot provide enough current on its own.
The current does not go through the battery on its way.
Think of it like a water tank connected to a "T" in a hose, when the tank is partially empty some of the water from the hose will go into it, but once the tank is full the water just continues through the hose bypassing the tank entirely.
So if current can’t go through the battery… how could it be receiving power…?
Once the battery is charged current goes directly from the DC power supply to the laptop electronics, like the example with the hose and tank it just bypasses the battery entirely because the battery is at the same potential as the power supply.
Batteries don't have an 'input' and 'output', they just have a single connection.
