I think it is a stupid change myself, but as far as I (recent Linux convert) can tell, mint is considered the go to distro for people coming freshly over from windows, and decidedly caters to beginners. A default setting for maximum user protection makes sense for that.

GregorGizeh , (edited )

I dont know, it is just the general consensus on every "I want to drop windows but i am scared of Linux" post ever made, and from my personal experience I found it actually too much like windows (made a live boot before I chose another distro).

GregorGizeh ,

Well I agreed that it is an ultimately bad change, but I can see how the beginner mode mentality would lead to this conclusion. Provide the new user with the most stable and bug free experience possible, and after some time they will probably turn that setting off on their own to get all that popular software.

GregorGizeh ,

Betting this is someone desiring to monetize some or all of what they are offering. Could be any malicious government too

GregorGizeh ,

Curiously I haven't had any of those glitches, bugs, crashes, performance dips and so forth that supposedly plague the game since release... For me it has been nothing but enjoyable since I bought in in 23.

GregorGizeh ,

Oh yeah i didn't want to diminish your experience, the game certainly was plagued with a disastrous rushed launch and still doesnt deliver everything people wanted out of the game. But i found it quite enjoyable gameplay in an amazing and compelling setting and have curiously not experienced any of the issues others seem to have. Even playing it under Linux was a non issue for me. That being said it is of course completely valid to refund the game if your experience was this terrible.

GregorGizeh ,

Take a look at bazzite. It is built upon the idea of a steamOS PC, and comes very close. It is also quite beginner friendly and idiot proof due to its architecture and the ability to roll back to a working version at any time, in case you brick something on accident.

GregorGizeh ,

As a recent convert from windows myself (about two weeks in) I can only recommend it. Almost everything including windows games worked right out of the box with minimal tinkering required, and setting up and configuring the system itself was even simpler than on Windows. It feels a lot like setting up a new smartphone as a comparison.

Personally i just copied my important files and documents to a backup drive, prepared the install medium and then nuked my windows installation, but you may want to take a less drastic approach and create a test partition first to dip your toes in.

People dont hate ai, people hate “ai“ llms designed by corporations to produce compliant, inoffensive and soulless art and content, eventually leaving nothing but drab menial labor for us, imprisoned in our corporate shaped minds, unable to express any revolutionary thought any more.

I am very interested in open source models i can run on my local machine. Just not in those corporate creativity perverters dystopian science fiction couldn't come up with if it tried.

E: there are a few ai communities on here too, for example fosai and stablediffusion, I would think you can find like minded people over there, even on lemmy.

GregorGizeh ,

Yeah i only heard it called that ironically or as an in joke

GregorGizeh ,

Last I checked the overall reviews were already back in "mostly positive" territory

GregorGizeh OP ,

And it can't be changed? Wow that's unfortunate

Speaking of which, I have been fiddling around with the widget and now it is gone completely... Any idea how to get at least this one back?

GregorGizeh OP ,

💪

GregorGizeh OP ,

Thanks, found it. At least I have this one back

Mastodon Incorporates as a Non-Profit in the US ( wedistribute.org )

As a project, Mastodon has operated under the umbrella of Mastodon GmbH, a German company that benefited from non-profit status with the German government. Despite all indications that they were doing everything right, Mastodon GmbH recently had its non-profit status revoked, resulting in the team to seek an alternative....

GregorGizeh ,

Way to go. "Technologiestandort Deutschland“ wie er im Buche steht.

GregorGizeh ,

Yes, they already have your money. Pay up again or get lost, it's just good business 🤑

GregorGizeh ,

Germany sucks as a place for tech startups, but not because of this. Your information is years outdated, the law has long since been adjusted to include digital media under the art and expression exclusions for the use and depiction of Nazi imagery.

GregorGizeh ,

They really aren't that heavy. When I was little, maybe 5 or 6, me and my best friend went to a construction site (excavators and cranes, so cool), snuck around on there during off hours (probably super dangerous, but here I am) and took some metal hooks, made from that metal grid stuff they use often in construction.

We then went and opened the actual manhole covers in my backyard with them, and even climbed down there (not that interesting, basically a few meters deep, with a small open sewage line running at the bottom).

Long story short, two pre school boys could open them by themselves in the 90s

(Help) Name of (sandbox?) game set on space? (Found: Starsector)

So I usually browse the internet at random and sometimes stumble upon some interesting games. Today as I was going to sleep however, I remember I saw a game that I cannot for the life of me find the name again. Not even in my search history (as I regularly wipe those). Can anyone help me find it again? Here is what I know:...

GregorGizeh ,

A space sandbox that is some years old is space engineers, though I suspect that's not it

GregorGizeh ,

Most of my issues are glitching through the ground from explosions or prone diving into terrain objects and getting stuck that way.

There is the occasional crash too, but the most annoying ones are where you get stuck and have to hope you can kill yourself with grenades to get out.

GregorGizeh , (edited )

Counter point: Blade

(Though it is debatable if he counts as literature)

GregorGizeh ,

If they retreated from the German market out of spite I could see the government voiding their rights and patents. Can't have rights to things you dont offer here. Then they'd end up with sanctioned piracy of their stuff. I dont think Microsoft would be that idiotic.

GregorGizeh ,

As someone who went through the application system to join my instance, it is really not that bad. Just have your potential users write a few sentences on their lemmy history, why they want to join your instance and what content they are looking for.

This can be answered in a few minutes, but it is already enough to discourage almost all bad faith applicants. The few hours of wait period while you check their application for copy pasting are also contributing to deter them, simply because spam users often want to do some mischief right now, waiting until tomorrow doesn't work well for those impulses.

GregorGizeh ,

You're welcome, and good luck! Hope it works out

GregorGizeh ,

I have been wanting to make the switch to Linux myself, and have done a bit of research on which to try for a beginner coming from windows. However the dual boot dangers are worrying me a bit, I dont want to nuke my windows installation just yet and only test the waters.

I have an SSD with windows on it and another with most of my programs and files. Could I partition the latter for a Linux installation or would I risk windows messing with it anyway?

GregorGizeh ,

I mean, of that selection it is clearly the least objectionable.

Helldivers 2’s Politics Appear To Be Flying Over The Heads Of Some ( www.forbes.com )

There is currently a very funny, kind of sad dust-up over Helldivers 2, in which self-proclaimed “anti-woke” gamers have previously heralded it as a rare game where they believe “politics” does not play a factor. Their faith was been shaken by an Arrowhead community manager they believed they found to be (gasp)...

GregorGizeh ,

I mean, the game is really on the nose with its parodic elements, how could they possibly not see that? Just talk to the supply officer ladies in the back part of the ship.

They are full of gems like “the bot society is wholly built on war. If they ever won they wouldnt know what to do“ (paraphrased), or the ministry of truth which ensures all citizens are properly indoctrinated informed, or the ministry of economy which makes sure resources flow to the "most deserving".

GregorGizeh ,

I recently switched from iPhone to Android, and let me tell you it is ridiculous how much more control you have over your user experience. Adblock alone made it worthwhile.

Anyway, on iPhone i used to use reader mode to filter all that crap. Though some asshole sites block the function

GregorGizeh ,
GregorGizeh ,

How so? All Browsers on ios are just skins for safari. Unless you are counting jailbreaking the device first

GregorGizeh ,

Just dug around the Safari settings on my (fairly old) device, i cant seem to find any extensions or addons. Though i believe you of course, a quick web search suggests so too. Perhaps my device isnt supporting them, its an old iphone x i think (or 8?)

GregorGizeh , (edited )

I recently ran into much the same problem, a power outage fried my second screen. My computer wouldn't recognize it any more, no matter which port and which cable I used. I even ordered a fucking HDMI to DisplayPort adapter to try if that made any difference. Sadly to no avail, because that one didn't work either, and I already knew the screen was still functional from running a smart TV dongle on it.

Eventually I had the brilliant idea to switch the HDMI cable to the second input on the screen itself and not just the graphics card, and that finally did the trick. The outage had apparently fried HDMI input 1 on my second screen.

GregorGizeh ,

This reads like AI SEO. So much repetitiveness to stretch a two sentence bit into an article

GregorGizeh ,

I don’t really care about the hashtags, I want more content. And properly federating with the biggest fediverse service seems an easy and eventually necessary step anyway for Lemmy.

GregorGizeh ,

Wasn’t she originally tupacs girl or something? And basically chose and treated will as second choice from the beginning

GregorGizeh ,

This brought back memories of teenage me and my idiot friends doing our own jackass stunts… we mostly jumped through a hedge trying to make it look like we just hurt our balls. We were not very creative.

GregorGizeh ,

But you see, if I post the gigachad xi image in a comment I win the argument and my stalin posting friends give me an upvote

GregorGizeh ,

The link is virtually unreadable, it formats really strangely on mobile. The text is in a 1cm wide column on the right side, allowing only ~3 letters per row.

GregorGizeh ,

I agree on principle, and I’m an atheist myself.

But the concept of faith, with a set of never changing rules and the ability to categorize things easily into good and bad, is far more persuasive and powerful than the vague assembly of progressive values associated with a belief in rationality.
Also, a massive part of the human population is centering their life around their respective assembly of mystified guidelines and ethics, and the search for a spiritual truth is also very ingrained and inherent to the human condition.

Simply removing that wont work without replacing the void with a new belief system and ethics code.

If they purge all their future medical practitioners all they do is shoot themselves in the foot. I hope they realize they have the power here before they cave.

GregorGizeh ,

If you’re so poor you have to dehydrate yourself pre flight to save 2kgs of weight you shouldn’t be spending your money on plane tickets.

GregorGizeh ,

They should just fucking cool it with the superheroes. I know it was mostly Disney who milked the genre to death but at this point I have immediate fatigue when presented with yet another piece of comicbook media.

Make something else, try again with superheroes in 5-10 years.

GregorGizeh ,

Ai is coming either way. It’s not really avoidable, and if Mozilla were to divest from that area too they would set themselves up for failure. A few years down the road all browsers will have some sort of ai integration, perhaps large parts of the web too. If Mozilla doesn’t keep up it will just become entirely irrelevant and the internet will be fully controlled by google and its chromium bs.

Besides, what they did so far is really neat and how I would like to see ai integrated: offline translation features on your local device, not somewhere under control of some corporation. More of that please
